The meaning of ruqyah in terminology is al-'udzah (a protection) used to protect people affected by illness, such as heat because of animal stings, possessions, and others. (See An-Nihayah fi Gharibil Hadith by Ibnul Atsir rahimahullahu 3/254)
In terminology, ruqyah is sometimes referred to as'azimah '. Al-Fairuz Abadi said: "The meaning of'azimah-'azimah is ruqyah-ruqyah, while the ruqyah is the verses of Al-Qur'an which are recited to people who are affected by various diseases by anticipation of healing." (See Al-Qamus Al-Muhith on the material ???)
The meaning of ruqyah in the etymology of the Shari'a is prayer and readings containing the request of protection and protection to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala to prevent or lift the plague / disease. Sometimes the prayer or reading is accompanied by a blast from the mouth to the palms or limbs of a person who is meruqyah or diruqyah. (See the transcript of the talk of Ash-Shaykh bin'Abdul'Aziz Alus-Sheikh entitled Ar-Ruqa wa Ahkamuha by Salim Al-Jaza`iri, page 4)
Surely the most important ruqyah is the prayers and recitations derived from Al-Qur`an and As-Sunnah. (Ibid, p.5)
Allah says, "Say, 'The Qur'an is the guidance and the cure for believers.'" (Qs. Fushilat: 44)
"And We have sent down from the Qur'an something that is a bidder and a mercy to believers." (QS.isra ': 82)
"O mankind, indeed have come to you from your Lord your Lord, and healing for disease in the breasts, and guidance and mercy for the believers" (Qs. Yunus: 57)
